The Shire of Dardanup’s Library, Administration and Community Building has been honoured as a national finalist in the prestigious 2025 Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) Awards for Excellence.
Representing Western Australia in the Sustainability category, the building was celebrated for its innovative design and commitment to environmental responsibility at the awards ceremony held in Brisbane.
Shire President Cr Tyrrell Gardiner, who attended the event alongside CEO André Schönfeldt, said the recognition on the national stage was a proud moment for the Shire and the entire community.
“To be named a finalist among some of the most outstanding and forward-thinking projects in Australia is a tremendous achievement and a testament to our commitment to sustainability and innovation,” Cr Gardiner said.
“We are incredibly proud to have our Library, Administration and Community Building acknowledged in this way, and it reinforces our dedication to creating community spaces that are not only functional and welcoming but also environmentally responsible.”
The Shire’s landmark building previously took out the State Sustainability title at the UDIA WA Awards for Excellence in September 2024, which secured its place as a finalist at the national event.
The building also received two awards at last year’s Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) Awards for the Best Public Works Project Greater than $5 million Award (Regional) and the Excellence in Environment and Sustainability Award.
Constructed with a strong focus on sustainability, the Shire building incorporates energy-efficient features, sustainable materials, and design elements that support environmental stewardship.
Cr Gardiner emphasised the significance of the building, which is the fourth all-timber build undertaken by the Shire, reflecting its commitment to Council’s 2050 Vision and Wood Encouragement Policy.
“By incorporating timber into our civic structures, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also leading in sustainable construction practices,” Cr Gardiner said.
“The building stands as a symbol of our Shire’s vision for a sustainable future and our commitment to setting a positive example in the region.
“We are proud to provide our community with a modern, welcoming hub that not only meets their needs but also reflects our dedication to environmental stewardship.”
