Firebreaks and Fire Control
Firebreaks & Fire Prevention Measures
Fire prevention measures must be completed and all properties (including residential, commercial, industrial and vacant land) cleared of fire hazards on or before 30 November each year to reduce the risk of fires during the bushfire season. Properties must remain free of hazard until the close of the Restricted Burning Period.
Shire of Dardanup advises property owners each year by way of advertising in the local newspaper, website and mailing of a reminder postcard.
Shire of Dardanup Rangers commence property inspections on 1 December each year to ensure all properties comply with the Fire Prevention Order. Rangers are appointed Fire Control Officers (FCO) under the Bush Fires Act 1954. The Act provides FCOs the authority to enter any land or building, including private property, to carry out inspections.

Applying for a Variation/Exemption
Where there are valid environmental or on-ground considerations that prevent full compliance with the Notice, landowners may apply to the Shire for an exemption or variation. An exemption or variation must be lodged in writing on a Firebreak Variation/Exemption Form. Applications for an exemption or variation must be submitted by 30 September each year. Applications must be signed off by your local Fire Control Officer before submitting your application to the Shire.
For further information phone the Shire of Dardanup on 9724 0307 or your local Fire Control Officer.
Firebreak Contractors
The Shire maintains a list of Firebreak Contractors who are commercially available to carry out firebreak compliance works on behalf of property owners. Any such arrangements are a private matter between the property owner and the contractor.
The responsibility for compliance with the annual firebreak notice by the due date rests solely with the owner/occupier of the land regardless of whether or not a contractor has been engaged.
