A valuable new resource designed to inspire residents to preserve local biodiversity by incorporating local Native plants into their gardens was launched recently.
The Keeping it Local booklet was developed in collaboration with the Cities of Bunbury and Busselton and the Shires of Capel, Collie, and Harvey, to help local gardeners select the right plants for their gardens to create vibrant and sustainable landscapes.
The Shire of Dardanup's Coordinator of Environment and Waste Eliza-Jane Jacques was a key advocate behind the Keeping it Local concept, which was led by the Leschenault Catchment Council.
"This guide will help locals understand what Native plants will thrive in the right environment and what birds and insects they might like to attract with the beautiful flowers,” Eliza-Jane said.
“The guide covers local Native plant species of the lower Swan Coastal Plan and Foothills, with each species described with icons noting which Local Government Areas (LGAs) they are suitable for and what tolerances or special characteristics they may have.
“All native species listed in the booklet are readily available in local nurseries, ensuring easy access to the plants best suited to this unique region.
“This is an encouraging way to plant the seeds for a healthier, more biodiverse future — right in our own backyards.”
Shire President Cr Tyrrell Gardiner highlighted the importance of collaboration among the councils and shires involved.
“Our work together on this project shows a strong commitment to protecting and enhancing local biodiversity,” he said.
“By pooling our expertise and resources, we’ve created a resource that speaks to the needs of our communities and celebrates the natural beauty of our shared environment.
“The Keeping it Local booklet encourages residents to play an active role in supporting native wildlife, from colourful bird species to beneficial insects, by incorporating plants that provide natural habitat and food sources.
“Whether you are a seasoned gardener or just beginning, this guide offers practical advice to enrich your gardening experience and connect with local nature.”
