The Shire of Dardanup considered several key matters at its Ordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday, 26 February 2025, including plans to explore replacement options for a local footbridge, updates to a draft policy on strategic water tanks, and responses to community-raised motions on urban canopy and landscaping.

Key decisions from the meeting included:

Council to explore options for footbridge replacement

The Shire of Dardanup Council resolved to explore alternative options for replacing the timber footbridge between Pratt Road Lookout and Watson Reserve at its Ordinary Council Meeting last night.

Council has requested that Shire staff investigate potential replacement designs and costings and bring these options back for review.

Cr Gardiner acknowledged the significance of the footbridge to the local community.

"The footbridge needs work, and we believe there is potential for a different design that could better connect Watson Reserve and the Pratt Road Lookout," Cr Gardiner said.

"We appreciate the enquiries from community members and look forward to reviewing the options to ensure this popular access point remains safe, functional, and well-connected for residents and visitors."

Cr Gardiner said further updates will be provided once replacement options have been presented to Council.

Other outcomes from last night’s meeting included:

Revised draft policy on strategic water tanks endorsed

Council endorsed a revised draft Local Planning Policy for the provision of strategic water tanks for firefighting purposes in non-reticulated areas.

The decision follows the identification of an administrative error in the previously endorsed 2024 version of the policy during the community consultation process.

As a result, Council resolved not to proceed with the 2024 version and instead endorsed an updated 2025 draft policy for public consultation.

The revised draft policy aims to ensure the community is properly informed and has the opportunity to provide feedback before a final version is considered.

Council responds to electors' motions on urban canopy and Ferguson Road landscaping

Council also endorsed actions in response to two motions raised by electors at last month’s Annual Electors’ Meeting.

Council resolved to include in the review of the Council Plan an action to develop a policy encouraging an Urban Canopy Strategy for the Shire. This will be considered as part of the 2025/2026 budget deliberations.

Additionally, Council directed the Chief Executive Officer to investigate the landscaping options outlined in the original 2018-19 road plans for Ferguson Road and to present these options for Council’s consideration in the 2025/2026 budget.

Postal vote supported for 2025 Local Government election

Council unanimously endorsed the appointment of the Western Australian Electoral Commissioner to conduct the 2025 Local Government Election on 18 October 2025.

Council also confirmed that the election will be conducted as a postal election, ensuring accessibility and convenience for voters.

Council’s next Ordinary Meeting will be held on Wednesday, 26 March from 5pm at the Council Chambers. All welcome.
