Softball now under lights thanks to joint funding support

Softball is now under lights, thanks to the “Lighting of the Diamonds” project at the Bunbury and Districts Softball Association (BADSA) Pavilion and Grounds in Eaton, symbolising the culmination of a project that will benefit softball enthusiasts across the South West and Peel regions.

The lights were officially switched on by former Shire President Cr Mick Bennett last month, which followed an exhibition match by the BADSA under 14s team.

At the opening, Cr Bennett said the new night lights are a boost to the Glen Huon Reserve, which now boasts the only dedicated purpose-built softball facility in the region.

Cr Bennett said the $466,015 project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of various partners and stakeholders, including the Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries Club Night Lights Fund, the Federal Government Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Fund Phase 3, and an impressive contribution by the BADSA.

“This state-of-the-art facility will provide softball groups with the opportunity to practice and compete during the evenings, creating a vibrant hub for softball enthusiasts,” Cr Bennett said.

“The Shire of Dardanup extends its gratitude to Jodie Hanns MLA, the local member, and the Honourable Nola Marino, the Federal member for Forrest, for their unwavering advocacy for funding for the new lighting, as well as to all the project partners who have funded this project.”

Cr Bennett acknowledged the vital role played by local softball clubs, athletes, players, volunteers, team managers, families, and coaches.

"Associations and sporting clubs serve as focal points for our communities. They bring people together, create a sense of identity, and foster community pride,” Cr Bennett said.

Local MLA Mrs Hanns said the project is a fantastic example of a passionate and active local sporting association partnering with local, State and Federal governments to improve their local facilities.

“The Cook Labor Government is investing in sporting infrastructure across WA to ensure local communities have access to modern facilities and stay healthy, active and connected,” Mrs Hanns said.

“I’m so pleased BADSA has benefited from our Club Night Lights program, and I look forward to seeing softball in the South West under lights.”

The Federal member for Forrest Mrs Marino, congratulated the local softball community for its role in the Lighting of the Diamonds project.

“There are passionate and very talented softball players using this facility. The new lighting will increase use of this great facility,” Mrs Marino said.

“The Local Roads & Community Infrastructure program has supported many great projects like this one in the South West.”

Softball WA CEO Rick Wolters thanked all the key stakeholders for their valued support of the BADSA.

“The installation of lights will provide immeasurable benefits of flexible playing and training options, provide more opportunities for more people to enjoy this great game, allowing families more spectating options,” Mr Wolters said.

“This also helps the Association when seeking to host tournaments. Thank you to all.”
