The Shire of Dardanup's Youth Advisory Group (YAG) has been announced as finalists in the 2024 WA Youth Awards, recognised for their outstanding contributions to the local youth community.

Shire President Cr Tyrrell Gardiner said the dedicated eight-member YAG team has been pivotal in advocating for youth needs and aspirations since its inception in 2021.

Cr Gardiner said YAG has spearheaded numerous initiatives, notably their annual flagship event YouthFest, which has seen significant growth over the past three years.

“This annual celebration, aligned with the Department of Communities Youth Week, has evolved into a vibrant platform for youth expression and engagement, thanks to the YAG's relentless community outreach efforts,” Cr Gardiner said.

"Their collaborative approach with over 30 stakeholders, including local businesses, community groups, and government entities, has created an inclusive space where youth can thrive and feel heard.

"Being nominated for the Collective Youth Action Award category is a testament to the YAG's unwavering commitment to empowering our local youth. I understand the awards received 155 nominations across 11 categories, so it’s exciting that our youth have a chance to be recognised at a state level.”

Cr Gardiner said YouthFest 2024 saw unprecedented community involvement, featuring interactive stalls, music performances, and workshops focused on mental health awareness and creative expression.

He said the event not only raised awareness for teen mental health but also generated funds for local youth mental health service Blue Leaf Initiative through their successful op shop market.

"YAG's dedication to inclusivity and youth empowerment has set a new standard for community engagement. Their efforts have not only enriched our events calendar but have fostered a sense of belonging among our youth,” Cr Gardiner said.

“The Shire of Dardanup congratulates YAG on this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to their continued leadership in shaping a brighter future for our community's youth.”

YAG member Chelsey North said regardless of the awards outcome, YAG will remain committed to serving the community.

As part of the awards nomination process, YAG were interviewed by a panel of judges via Teams on Wednesday and will find out the awards outcome on Friday, 20 September.
