Shire welcomes $76 million pledge for emergency management

The Shire of Dardanup has welcomed the Nationals WA’s $76 million election commitment to improve emergency management services for local governments.

This includes a $56.7 million commitment to the Local Government Grants Scheme and a proposed $20 million allocation over four years to expand the Community Emergency Service Manager (CESM) Program.

The pledge will fund upgrades to fire stations, State Emergency Service (SES) facilities, and additional staffing to support critical emergency management functions, including the creation of 27 new CESM positions, which will serve 54 local government areas through funding from the Emergency Services Levy.

Shire of Dardanup President Cr Tyrrell Gardiner said that such a funding boost would be significant step forward for communities reliant on volunteer brigades and emergency services.

“This commitment is vital for ensuring our State’s dedicated volunteers have the resources and support they need to keep our community safe,” Cr Gardiner said.

“Since 2019 the Shire has requested a Community Emergency Service Manager, only to be declined due to insufficient funding. This has left us relying on ratepayer contributions to fill the gap.

“We are open to sharing a CESM with a neighbouring Shire, as we understand the importance of a consistent and coordinated approach to emergency management across local governments.

The Shire already shares a Bushfire Risk Mitigation Coordinator with neighbouring local governments, an arrangement that has proven successful. Cr Gardiner expressed optimism that the CESM program could adopt a similar collaborative model.

Cr Gardiner said the Shire commended the Nationals WA for recognising the need for additional support and urged other parties to follow suit.

“This funding will ensure local governments can have a dedicated CESM supported by the State Government, rather than relying solely on ratepayers,” he said.

“It’s a fantastic commitment, and we look forward to seeing a similar focus on this from all political parties.”
