After 26 years with the Shire of Dardanup, Natalie Hopkins has stepped into the role of Director of Corporate & Governance, a position that aligns with her deep expertise in finance and local government.

Her journey began in her early twenties when she took a position in local government — a decision she has never looked back on.

“Working in local government has shaped my values, skills, and personal goals,” Mrs Hopkins said.

“It’s been a career that has allowed me to grow and be part of meaningful policy, legislative, and budgetary processes.”

Natalie’s new position as Director signifies a pinnacle of dedication and achievement in her career.

Over the years, she has contributed to various facets of Shire operations, including finance management, community engagement, and strategic planning.

Natalie’s accomplishments in these roles have prepared her for this new chapter and built her reputation as a leader known for her integrity and resilience.

One of the pivotal experiences that shaped her leadership approach came in 2017, when she was given the opportunity to step in as Acting Director of Corporate & Governance.

“I guided the directorate through a time of change and uncertainty, which solidified my commitment to local government leadership,” she explains.

This challenging period revealed her strengths in building trust and resilience within her team—qualities that have become hallmarks of her leadership.

The Shire of Dardanup places a strong emphasis on its TRACES values, representing Trust, Respect, Accountability, Community/Customer, Excellence, and Support.

These values resonate deeply with Natalie.

“Local government is a highly regulated industry,” she said.

“My objective is to continue providing good governance, due diligence, and compliance to regulation within the industry.”

Natalie’s approach to leadership is grounded in collaboration and mutual respect.

Her strategies include listening, giving feedback, and inviting staff input into decision-making processes.

“It’s essential to understand what motivates team members and fosters a sense of belonging,” she said.

By cultivating engagement and satisfaction, Natalie creates a productive work environment where everyone can perform at their best.

Her vision for the Shire extends beyond her team. Natalie is excited about the prospect of fostering a collaborative culture across the organisation.

“There’s so much knowledge within the Shire. A collaborative approach allows us to share best practices and embrace innovation,” she said.

Looking ahead, Natalie is particularly enthusiastic about the introduction of a new ERP accounting software system in 2025, which she believes will drive continuous improvement and operational efficiency.

Balancing work, study, and family, Natalie completed her Bachelor of Business with a major in Accounting in 2018 and a Graduate Diploma of Business in 2022.

“I learned not to sweat the small stuff,” she reflects, crediting these experiences with honing her resilience and adaptability.

Recently, the Shire was recognised by the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) as one of the Top 20 Local Governments for Financial Reporting, a testament to the Shire’s commitment to excellence.

Natalie’s academic background has been instrumental in shaping her approach.

“I studied various leadership styles and agile collaboration techniques, which I’ve applied in real-life scenarios at work,” she said.

This knowledge has enabled her to build agile, high-performing teams who can navigate the complexities of a contemporary workplace.

To young professionals and emerging leaders, Natalie advises setting small goals and pursuing them wholeheartedly.

“Focus on what you can control, learn, and develop skills that bring you contentment and satisfaction in your work environment,” she said.

She emphasises the importance of taking advantage of opportunities when they arise.

Grateful for the support from her family and mentors, Natalie expresses her thanks to the Executive team for entrusting her with this new role.

“The support from my family, especially as I balanced studies and work early on in my career, has been essential. I look forward to bringing transparency, accountability, and continued growth to the Shire in my role as Director of Corporate & Governance.”

Shire of Dardanup CEO André Schönfeldt expressed his confidence in Natalie’s appointment, praising her extensive knowledge and dedication to the Shire’s values.

“Natalie’s expertise in finance and her commitment to our TRACES values make her an invaluable asset to our leadership team,” he said.

“Her strategic mindset and collaborative approach will bring fresh perspective across all Directorates.

“Natalie has consistently demonstrated resilience and a talent for turning challenges into opportunities. We’re excited to see how her focus on transparency, accountability, and staff development will strengthen our service to the community.”
