Dardanup born and bred, Jake Harvie, is set to shine on the world stage as he makes his Olympic debut with the Kookaburras in Paris over the next fortnight.

A former Boyanup Hockey Club junior player, Jake's journey has been supported by the community from the start.

Shire of Dardanup President Cr Tyrrell Gardiner said Jake was a recipient of the Shire's personal development grant in 2016, which helped him achieve his dream of representing Australia at the U21 Men's Australian Championship in Sydney.

He said Jake also featured on the Shire’s My People My Place podcast that was launched in 2020.

“Jake was our third guest on the podcast, and he shared about the rich history of our Australian hockey teams and how the hockey community, from grassroots to elite, provides the right environment for players to thrive both on and off the field,” Cr Gardiner said.

“He also shares the evolution and growth of the international sport and how his family legacy always saw hockey as a real possibility for his future.”

Cr Gardiner congratulated Jake on this incredible milestone, highlighting how proud the entire community is of his achievements.

“A big congratulations to Jake on his Olympics debut, the entire Shire of Dardanup is rallying behind him as he represents not only his community, but the nation,” Cr Gardiner said.

“Jake made his international debut in 2017 and narrowly missed selection for the delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Making him even more determined for selection for the Paris Olympics.

“I’m sure many are aware that Jake is the grandson of three-time Olympian, Gordon Pearce, and Jake’s younger brother Tom is also a high-level hockey player as a member of the National Hockey league team the Perth Thundersticks.

“Jake lines up for the first game tomorrow as the Kookaburras versus Argentina. Best wishes to Jake and the team, which also includes Margaret River product Aran Zalewski, who is the Kookaburras captain.”
