The Shire of Dardanup’s Make-It Space, located in the new Library, Administration and Community Building, has received a welcomed $151,581 boost from Lotterywest.

Shire President Cr Tyrrell Gardiner said the grant will be used to purchase equipment for the state-of-the-art space, which was officially named after former Shire President and Honorary Freeman Mick Bennett.

Cr Gardiner said the Mick Bennett Make-It Space will be a cutting-edge and imaginative community space that fosters STEAM education, innovation and community involvement.

“The Make-It Space will be a collaborative workspace for making, creating, learning, exploring and sharing, by providing access to the latest tools, materials and resources for community members from all walks of life,” Cr Gardiner said.

“A variety of equipment will be on offer to the public at the space, including 3D printers, laser cutters, robotics and automation, sewing machines and a variety of hand tools. We can’t wait to open this space to the community in the coming months.”

Cr Gardiner said the space would provide an opportunity to people to learn and potentially gain a passion for technology, design, innovation, education and critical thinking.

Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns commended the Shire’s vision for a STEAM education and innovation hub for the community to use, which will open later this year.

“As a former teacher, it’s always exciting to see opportunities and spaces for learning, and this Make-It Space will be embedded right in the centre of Eaton,” she said.

Cr Gardiner said the Lotterywest support It is the second major grant received for the Make-It-Space, with local company Wespine also contributing $47,000.
